The 30-mile Stort Valley Way explores the quiet paths, ancient tracks and peaceful villages that surround the town of Harlow in west Essex. And there’s a seven-mile stretch by the River Stort itself, with water meadows, a nature reserve and a sculpture trail to explore. With good public transport and easy parking, it’s simple to walk the Stort Valley Way either in a single visit or in shorter day stages.

I first came across ‘Trailman’ website when I was planning a trip to the North Norfolk Coast. It was useful and interesting so I kept it as a starred website for easy reference. Only later did I realise that ‘Trailman’ was Essex & Herts Ldwa’s own Peter Aylmer, who is extremely knowledgeable about not only his own county of Essex, but also of long distance paths all over Britain.
Peter’s latest guide ‘Stort Valley Way’ demonstrates his passion for the footpaths, tracks and villages close to his home. The route is described in detail with strip maps making each section easy to follow. The guide describes the landscape and history of the area and also offers advice about transport, refreshment or accommodation, making it all that you need to follow this attractive 30 mile path. Peter’s guide has split the route into 3 sections – equally suitable for experienced walkers who could cover the whole route in one day, for those who like to walk at a slower pace and opt to do a 2 day or 3 day walk or for those who choose to walk just short sections at a time. I am constantly surprised at the lovely countryside in Essex and Herts. This guide makes me want to explore more of it.
